The 1828 Project is one of our signature programs at IndyHub and each year it’s full of incredible leaders between the ages of 18 and 28. Greg is a part of 1828’s Class VI. We sent him some questions. He responded. Keep reading to learn more about Greg!

Greg_StowersHow do you spend your days?

I wake up and try to get active as soon as possible, followed by tea – never coffee (I think it’ll stunt my growth). I spend the majority of my days in the City County Building or at various events around the city. Outside of work, I make an effort to attend community events.

Where are you originally from?

Westside of Indianapolis, near the southern edge of Washington Township.

Where is your favorite spot to go in Indy?

The view of the city from the Major Taylor Velodrome. In a past life, I rode BMX bikes at the velodrome and used to take the hill off Cold Spring to the track. On weekends, odds are you could catch me at Thunderbird in Fountain Square – Josh and the rest of the staff have curated an awesome and versatile space for events and of course, beverages in moderation.

How do you typically travel around the city?

Mostly by car, but I’m excited about all the people and organizations hoping to make mass transit a bigger part of our city.

If you could have coffee with anyone, living or not, who would it be and why? (Bonus points for which Indy coffee joint you’d take them to)

I’ve seen firsthand how a conversation can change everything. With trying to develop Hashtag Lunchbag Indy I realize branding is important. I’ve followed Marc Ecko for years and also read his book Unlabel: Selling You Without Selling Out. I don’t know where I’d be without Hip-Hop and he’s long been an influencer in the culture. I think it would be also to pick his brain and ask questions, I don’t drink coffee, but some Green Tea from Mojo’s Coffeehouse off Michigan would be great.

Thinking forward to the next 5 years in Indy, what are you most excited about for the future?

Excited for my fellow 1828’ers, as well as the many young adults as we begin to play a bigger role in the future of the city. I’ve heard it said that we’ll be the future leaders of this city in 10 – 15 years; that’s a long time to wait. We’re already charting our own courses, and as much as we are the microwave I-want-it-now-generation, we’re doing the work necessary to earn opportunities. The model for leadership and service has changed; I’m hopeful we can build upon the work of our predecessors and move the city forward.

If you could only keep 5 possessions, what would they be and why?

  • Notebook/Pen – Someday I’ll publish some of them
  • Cassette Tape of Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt – Because…duh.
  • My iPod (not my cell phone just music): Music of all genres, is a daily necessity. I’m proud of my collection.
  • Blue Blazer: It’s the most versatile piece of clothing, from the boardroom to the club.
  • Watch my grandfather gave me:  So I’ll always know what time it is – literally and figuratively.

If you won the lottery, what would you do with your winnings?

There was a time when this was a near daily conversation and as much as I want to say I’d keep to the normal routine – I know that’s a lie. Aside from plotting a course around the world and investing in the futures of my family and friends, I’d invest in the young people of Indianapolis (at least to start). From targeted social programs to scholarships, winning the lottery could fast track many of the inroads I’m already making help others.

Are you reading anything interesting right now, what book?

1984. An oldie, but goodie. I know, I know, I should have read it years ago, but better late than never, right? As I’m reading it just reaffirms the importance of holding our government accountable. The book gives me pause with the ease in which people go along with decisions – it’s just something that has ever worked for me. As much as we want to believe in the idea of America, it’s important we question our leaders and hold them responsible for their action/inaction.

What is your favorite family tradition?

Monopoly. One would think it’s more than a game if you were to watch us from the outside. We’ve got some house rules that speed the game up, but we take trades and awkward rolls of the dice seriously. I’m by far the most calculated player in the house and my win total is unmatched.
