Ashley’s Holiday Countdown | IPL Yuletide Celebration

Hey, there friends!

I’m excited that you’re still with me, blog number three in the Holiday countdown and we’re just getting started! This year more than ever it seems that holiday cheer has filled our minds and hearts a bit earlier than before, maybe because we need something that brings us all together – or at least something that brings music to our souls.

I had the amazing opportunity to enjoy Monday java with Sarah Myer a.k.a IndyHub’s newest board chair – and what I like to call her, #bosslady. Sarah filled me on the fun deets that surround the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s annual Yuletide celebration. When I think about our coffee date it brings light to me inside, she’s a true rockstar and she gets to share the gift of music to our city every day! (Like I said, #bosslady.)

Ashley Miser: What does Yuletide mean to you personally?

Sarah Myer: I was actually originally hired to market and promote Symphony on the Prairie and Yuletide. I remember my first time seeing it. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing- and that I had missed it all these years! It’s not just the orchestra performing some holiday songs. It’s an entire cast of Broadway singers and dancers, incredible sets, top-notch production, and of course, beautiful music performed by our orchestra.

AM: If someone is brand new to the show what can they expect?

SM: I always tell people that Yuletide is an experience from the moment you walk in the theater. Even before you do! We actually have live reindeer outside of the theater on Monument Circle to greet you! As you enter the main lobby, there is holiday music coming from our pipe organ, the amazing smell of holiday cookies which are sold to patrons, costumed characters greeting you and your family, and of course, our giant Christmas tree. And THEN there’s the show! The curtain goes up, and you can’t believe the sound coming from the stage. The singers, Sandi Patty, the musicians- all come together to produce this holiday spectacular. If you don’t leave feeling the Christmas spirit, you may not have a pulse. It’s incredible.

AM: How long has Yuletide been around?

SM: This is Yuletide’s 32nd year! It’s obviously changed a lot since the first year. Many more performances- we’re now doing 31. Our production team also changes the show every year. So we have our traditions- like the tap dancing Santas- but then there are new elements- like this year, with Kyle Van Newkirk, the winner of J Lo’s World of Dance!

AM: And what about you? How long have you worked at ISO?

SM: I have been at the ISO a little over six and a half years.

AM: Word on the street is you have a new role, care to share more?

SM: Why yes I do! I started as Director of Marketing in 2011, and in September, I was promoted to Vice President of Marketing. The position actually didn’t exist. I, along with my team, have helped increase sales 64% since 2013, and I felt I deserved this promotion. So I actually put my own proposal together, and with the help and encouragement of colleagues, board members, and some very close friends, I went to my boss and asked for it. I feel the need to tell that part of the story for anyone out there who is afraid to ask for something they worked hard for and believe they deserve- especially women, as I think we often shy away from this. Don’t. Go for it! I have to say, I am very lucky to have an incredible staff and leadership that believe in me and inspire me every day. It is a hard job, no doubt about it. But I am very happy here.

AM: What is the best way for someone who is new to the city or just looking to get involved with the ISO?

SM: I would say come to a concert, volunteer, or join FORTE. We perform over 180 concerts per year. I promise there is something for you. Volunteering is a great way to meet people, and you get to hear a concert for free! And FORTE is our young professionals group, where I’ve met some great connections and incredible friends. The ISO has a great momentum going on right now- and it’s only going to keep moving forward. So I hope more of those new to the city try the ISO and come along for the ride!

AM: And if they want to attend Yuletide…any special gifts for our readers?

SM: Of course, Ashley! You will receive a $5 discount with the code: INDYHUB5 – Be quick, this is only good for our December 6 show! Get your tickets today.
