Daily Living and Self-Care

It seems as if managing my daily tasks requires energy–or maybe it is just me? I sometimes find it challenging to balance my home life, work, family obligations, church, and social life without energy! Figuring out what motivates us can help us tap into our energy much easier.

For me personally, I can always tell the difference between my high and low energy moments. I notice that when I eat heavy foods such as red meat, fast food, sweets, and bread, I tend to be lethargic and unfocused. When I’m maintaining a healthier diet consuming foods like baked dishes, fresh salads, increased daily water intake, I am motivated and my energy level is very high.

“The link between emotions and eating is no myth, “says Sherry L. Pagoto, PhD, associate professor of preventive and behavioral medicine at University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. “People do eat to feel better, so the link is there.”

In maintaining a healthy lifestyle, it definitely requires discipline and focus. When it comes to my health, I pray daily for strength, wisdom, and willpower to eat healthy and maintain an exercise schedule. It can be challenging to eat right, especially when you have a busy schedule and fast food is the easy option. It could help to have your spouse, roommate, significant other, family member, or friend be your accountability partner who can help you stay on track or can also be your workout buddy.

In today’s society, we have so many resources and tools to aid us in monitoring our health and wellness journey. Think about it: Fitbits, Gluten Detectors, Sport Watches, and other technology continues to advance, plus most of us who have smartphones have it built into our devices as well!

Finding creative ways to plan and strategize your daily tasks can be very beneficial. I know a few people that plan their meals weekly, or even prepare their wardrobe for the week. I had recently listened to a devotion in which the Pastor encouraged us to plan our schedule and activities to avoid unnecessary stress in our lives. He stated that when we rush, we typically stress and worry. Whereas when we plan, we are more relaxed.

What I really love about Indianapolis is that we have so many resources available to encourage us in our wellness journey! We have several popular health-based grocery stores and shops such as: Fresh Thyme-Farmers Market, Trader Joe’s, The Fresh Market, Indianapolis City Market (and Original Farmers Market open on summer Wednesdays). Experimenting new recipes is always fun! The GNC store is also a great resource to purchase vitamins, supplements, and herbs.

During the warmer seasons, we can enjoy a nice daily walk on The Monon Trail, Northwestway Park, The Canal, Massachusetts Avenue, Eagle Creek Park.

Once it begins to get cooler late Fall/Early Winter, we can utilize our local gyms: The YMCA, Community Healthplex, Planet Fitness, LA Fitness, Anytime Fitness, Life Time Fitness, Title Boxing Gym.

Remember to take care of you first–you are important!
