Student Voices: Winter in Indiana

Winter can be a strange time, especially in Indiana. One day it will be snowing at 22 degrees outside, and the next it is sunny and 75. It makes for hard decisions like what to wear, but most importantly what to do to entertain yourself when this not-so-great weather is here to stay for a while. Since my four-year reign here in the Big Ap..I mean city of Indianapolis, I found there are several cozy and fun places to fuel the fire to keep me warm during the winter months.

Food

Most of those being on Mass Ave. The greatest thing about that street is that there are so many restaurants to choose from! Some of my favorites are Bru Burger, Bakersfield, and Nine Irish Brothers.

These places bring the traditional fare such as burgers, tacos, and anything fried, but add a twist that will leave you wanting more and becoming a regular (may or may not be talking about myself…guilty!). Food is always a staple in the winter months because you can wear those big sweaters to hide that wanna-be summer bod that you have definitely been neglecting (guilty once again).

Entertainment

I have to admit that I am a bit of a sports fanatic regardless of the sport. Some of my favorite spots include the Indiana Farmers Coliseum where I can hit up an Indy Fuel game and Bankers Life Fieldhouse to watch the Pacers. However, if the sports world isn’t really your scene, there are just as awesome alternatives. You could always head to the movies, go Duck Pin Bowling, or catch a concert at the Old National Centre.

Another great option that is new to the Indy scene is Punch Bowl Social bar. It is all the rave between my friends and is a place that can cure that winter blues and bring back childhood memories whether it’s the arcade games, the bowling alley, or even better, karaoke.

Winter is a time where gray skies and shorter days take over. However, that should not stop you from going out and having a good time in a city that allows for so much activity. Bundle up and explore the Circle City!
