Tutor an Area Homeless Child
School on Wheels is in need of volunteers to tutor children living in area homeless shelters and schools.
Tutors are expected to volunteer one hour per week for one school semester (15-17 weeks). Ages 11-13 can tutor alongside a parent or guardian.
School on Wheels after-school tutoring takes place Monday-Thursday between 3:30-7:30p.m.
Lunchtime programs at IPS #14 and IPS #54 through the MartH (Math + Art) and STAR (Striving Towards Academic Readiness) programs between 10:40 am and 2:00 pm, Wednesdays and Fridays.
As a tutor, you’ll be able to:
- Enhance the educational opportunities of homeless children.
- Demonstrate consistency and encouragement by helping a child to understand why their education is not only important, but possible.
- Become the heart and soul of School on Wheels!

More about School on Wheel
School on Wheels‘ mission is to provide one-on-one tutoring and educational advocacy for school-aged children impacted by homelessness. We mobilize over 400 volunteer tutors every year to provide homework assistance and educational support to children who need it the most.
We supply the children in our program with school uniforms and a backpack filled with school supplies. We believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of homelessness.
