We met Lauren Tolley after speaking to the current class of Public Allies– sharing more about our work at IndyHub and hearing their stories and experiences through the Public Ally program. Lauren was actually connected to her current role as an Ally at IndyVolved! Read on to learn more about Lauren and her experience.

How did you first hear about IndyVolved?

I first heard about IndyVolved through a program called EmployUp which was a program for career changers and those starting in a career. I wanted to be in the program as I was an administrative assistant, but I wanted to change careers into nonprofit advocacy.

What year did you attend the event? Was this your first IndyVolved?

I first attended IndyVolved in 2017. It was the first time I had heard of it as well.

Were there specific organizations you were looking forward to talking to ahead of time or did you just explore the event?

I went to explore and network as a part of the EmployUp program, as I was told this would be a good way to meet nonprofits. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I connected with a few organizations. The most impactful one was Public Allies.

I understand that you found your current position at Public Allies through IndyVolved, can you share more about that?

Public Allies was tabling at IndyVolved and I happened to come across them and I thought they were a great fit for me and would be a great opportunity to get to know the nonprofit community in Indianapolis a lot better. I applied to the program and got accepted, and now I am a second year Ally. I’ve served at two different organizations and enjoyed them both throughly. I’ve made far more connections than I could have hoped. Additionally, I’ve learned a lot about myself and being a leader than I anticipated.

What was your favorite part about the event?

My favorite part of IndyVolved was the variety and abundance of organizations I was able to meet at the central library that day. Additionally, I don’t think I spent much time at the library beforehand, but at IndyVolved, I was able to explore and appreciate it much more.

Lauren is just one of many with stories like this! We are excited to continue the important work of connecting our young leaders to the non-profits and civic organizations that make our city what it is at IndyVolved 14 presented by Indianapolis Power & Light Company.

Head here to register for the event on Thursday, June 13 at Central Library in downtown Indianapolis from 6- 8:30 p.m.
