Student Voices: Stand-up in Indy

kjfallon_svblog1There is arguably no better way to connect with someone than through a laugh. Laughter is the common ground that brings us all together, despite our differences. Sometimes it comes from your friend’s favorite joke that you’ve heard for the tenth time, or meeting someone new and laughing over a scene from the “Big Bang Theory.” Nowadays, it seems that there are less and less places where we can come together to share a laugh.

However, we’re in luck! Indianapolis has quite a few traditional style comedy clubs: the kind with the old fashion brick walls and microphone. I’ve been to a couple, even tried some jokes on-stage, and what a wonderful experience! It is quite a pleasure to sit back, have a drink or two, and listen to some jokes. Below are three places that I think offer great experiences for a night out!

Crackers Comedy Club
Downtown and Broad Ripple

Cracker’s Comedy Club is known for bringing in “up and coming” talent within the comedy realm. Crackers Comedy Club offers a professional yet fun atmosphere to the stand-up scene. Since there are locations both Downtown and in Broad Ripple, it is easy to get to from all over Indy.

Morty’s Comedy Joint
Keystone at the Crossing

Morty’s brings in talent, but has a well established open-mic scene too. Open Mic nights run as a contest: if you are voted by the crowd as the best comedian that night, you compete in the finals. If you win in the final, then you can get trained as a host for other comedy nights. Morty’s offers a unique opportunity for anyone who has wanted to try stand up.

Comedy Sportz
Mass Ave Arts District

This is a wonderful place for family fun! Comedy Sportz is all improve, and highly engages the audience for the performance. While it does not lean on stand up like most comedy clubs, it still is a welcoming place to laugh with friends and family!

In addition to the three I mentioned, there are plenty of other comedy clubs to check out in Indianapolis, and I encourage you to explore them! Spending an evening at a club will be a special experience that will leave you with a smile that hurts from laughing too much.
