1828 Reflections: First Class VI Session

greg_stowers“Adulting” has become a part of our daily routine. Whether it’s actually laying out your clothes so you won’t have to rush in the morning (or at least telling yourself you’ll do it), to not going on that Facebook rant about sensationalism in politics because people actually pay attention to your posts, it all blends perfectly. We’re not that old where a weeknight out is a problem, but we’re not that young where the aforementioned night out will be felt for what seems like days on end. We’re old enough to realize things have changed, but still young enough to be the change we wish to see.

No matter how caught up in our lives and careers we may seem, acknowledgement is always a good thing. We’ve seen Indy Hub’s work around our city, so being selected for this year’s 1828 class is a sign that we’re on the right track. While sitting in on our first meeting, it’s obvious we are not only a group of thinkers, but “doers” as well; this mindset is both contagious and motivating.  Titles and accolades will surely come, but it’s awesome to be recognized as we are still adding to our own individual bodies of work.

We all come from different cultures and backgrounds, but gravitate toward the same idea of playing an engaged role in the future of Indianapolis. Comparisons have no place here as we are all on our own particular path, so the smiles and looks of admiration from each other come from a place of genuine interest and concern. From thoughts like, “Oh me too” or “I’ve heard of that” we’re all more alike than different.

“Adulting” also provides that we build relationships, not just for the sake of passing off a business card, but for something more meaningful. This is an opportunity for like-minded people to build bridges and find avenues to make our communities better. While it’s important to have a strong individual effort, support from our peers plays a vital role. Whether discussions on public transit to events around the city, it means a lot to look out a group of people and see your peers supporting your ideas.

So, while older generations may paint us with an apathetic brush, we see the importance of blending the inevitable feeling of adulthood, with the childlike exuberance necessary to play an active role in shaping not only our own lives, but the lives of those in the communities we represent.

I’ve learned and can speak firsthand on the importance of realizing there isn’t just one way to make an impact or be successful. With such a diverse array of opinions and ideas, I’m excited to see how we make our mark; even if I’m still rushing out of to my car in the morning.
