Intercollegiate YMCA students from Butler University, IUPUI and UIndy will host families and their pooches for a doggone good time at the inaugural Underdawg 5K run and walk at 8 a.m. September 21, 2019, at Butler University.
The Intercollegiate YMCA has been enhancing the student experience at Butler since 1879 and is the oldest registered student organization on campus. But our commitment to “connecting campus to community” doesn’t end there! Students from the University of Indianapolis have been providing free after school and summer camp programs in Indianapolis Housing Agency communities for close to 20 years.
Our goal has always been to remove the barriers in these communities that would prevent children from having a safe and nurturing environment to go to after school where they can receive mentoring and educational support. Our programs are heavily facilitated by college-age volunteers and AmeriCorps State Service Members and serve around 150 children annually.
While we are deeply passionate about our youth programs, we are equally passionate about ensuring college students have a positive and meaningful interaction with Indianapolis. Each student we work with at Butler University, the University of Indianapolis and IUPUI has an opportunity to develop their leadership skills and integrate service learning into their professional development; making them a more community-minded individual.
The 1st Annual Underdawg 5K is just one experience we offer that supports our commitment to developing community-minded individuals. The race will help fund free after-school and day camp programs run by the college students for youth in low-income communities.
The Underdawg 5K is the newest of nine fun-themed, holiday-inspired races in the YMCA Inspire Indy 5K Series designed to get Central Indiana families moving all year round. Bring your whole family, including dogs!
Participants can earn a medal (Inspire Indy Series Runners), T-shirt or other great prize at each race and series swag when they do three or more races. Tickets range from $29-$37 depending on when purchased and are discounted with each additional race you do.
