Indy is home to nearly 150,000 Millennial and Gen Z residents. We work in every single sector. We hold leadership roles at nonprofits, in government and throughout our business community. We volunteer, we advocate and give back to the causes that matter to us. We are learners, builders, doers and change makers. And we care a whole heck of a lot about the future of our city, state, nation and world.
But despite our fierce optimism and interest in shaping the world around us, the simple fact is that – in 2018 – less than half of Millennials voted, and just 30% of eligible Gen Z voters made it to the polls.
At IndyHub, we know that the simple act of voting is immeasurably powerful, and it ensures that the important perspectives and voices of our generation are heard loud and clear. Combined, Millennials and Gen-Zs will make up 37% of the eligible voters in this year’s national general election. As our two generations move toward being the majority of the voting populace, it’s a life-changing moment to take action and play a bigger role in the election. A perfect example of this is the grassroots effort of Go Vote Indy, supporting voter registration and free transportation to the polls on Election Day. These are young people doing incredible things all to get people to the polls.
So as we get closer to Election Day, we want to make sure you have the information you need, not about candidates, but about exercising this most important fundamental right. In the weeks ahead, we’ll help you develop a voting plan, showcase why it matters and even share details on how you can be a part of making the election happen on a local level. The future isn’t in the hands of our parents or grandparents anymore, it’s in our hands, and the most important thing we can do is show up to vote.
