As we’ve been tentatively emerging from our pandemic-imposed cocoons over the past several weeks, I‘ve discovered a newfound appreciation for the freedom to simply move about the city again. Seeing the people and places I’ve missed has brought so much joy to my life.
I’ve also noticed how our streets and re-energized business districts need some extra love right now. That’s why I’m so excited to help lead a citywide campaign aimed to change the way Indianapolis thinks about litter.
A Little Love Stops Litter is a public awareness campaign developed through a partnership between Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and the City of Indianapolis. Our goal is to reduce the amount of litter present in our city by impacting littering behavior. Of course, we’ll continue to work together to pick up litter through programs like Great Indy Cleanup and Adopt-A-Block. But wouldn’t it be great if we simply saw less littering in the first place?
This summer, we are promoting eight little ways everyone can make a big impact:
- Bag loose trash
- Pick up one piece of trash
- Use heavy trash pickup days
- Properly dispose of cigarette butts (they’re the #1 littered item in the country)
- Use ToxDrop locations
- Re-use whenever possible
- Keep a litter bag in your car (prevent trash from blowing out the window)
- Carry it with you (until you find a trash can)
In addition to the awareness campaign, we are testing some specific interventions, such as signage and educational mailers. I can’t wait to see the results of our data collection and analysis of those trials!
