Experience the Magic of Winter Solstice! Indianapolis area congregations come together in an earth-affirming celebration of the return of the Light–the only one of its kind in central Indiana.

The 16th Annual Indianapolis Winter Solstice Celebration will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis, on
Monday, December 19, 2022
Tuesday, December 20, 2022
at 7:00 p.m.

The event is free, but seating is limited. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

This family-friendly, non-denominational event celebrates the return of the sun, weaving stories and songs together for a night that ranges from meditative to raucous … all of it deeply powerful and joyous. It’s more than a performance, it’s more than a worship service. It’s a feast of sound and spirit.

While many are caught up in the hectic pace of the holiday season this time of year, Indianapolis area congregations and community members are preparing to honor the return of the Light on the longest night year.

The celebration is based on the Winter Solstice Singing Ritual by Julie Forrest Middleton and Stasa Morgan Appel. This year, the Solstice Choir is conducted by Pam Blevins Hinkle, former conductor of the Indianapolis Women’s Chorus, director of the Spirit & Place Festival, and co-leader of Song Squad. Marg Herder provides original music, with sanctuary and altar design by local artists Stephanie Lewis Robertson, Kate Oberreich, and others.

If you’ve never attended, let us tell you a little about the event.
Setting the mood is …
• the fantastic space in the sanctuary of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis
• twinkle lights and candle light
• instruments ranging from djembe (African drum) to cello and synthesizer
• a celebration choir, conducted by Pam Blevins Hinkle
• original music by Le Weaver
• spectacular visuals by Stephanie Lewis Robertson and Kate Oberreich
• based on a beautiful ritual published by Emerald Earth Publishing

Oh, and we can’t forget the fun feast afterward. Everyone pitches in for the feast, bringing delicious finger food to share while connecting with other attendees.

The Indy Winter Solstice Celebration is a collaboration among Central Indiana Unitarian Universalists—All Souls Unitarian Church, Heartland Unitarian Universalist Church, Oaklandon Unitarian Universalist Church, Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis, and Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Hendricks County—along with JourneysFire Spiritual Center, CircleWebWorks, and Zemlin Photo.
