If You Can’t Hear the Music Here, Turn Up Your Own Volume

Brent_Lyle_HeadshotSpotlights. Flashing lights. Booming bass. Mic cords traveling about from unknown beginnings. Whether big stage or small stage, jukebox, boombox, or mobile app, music is a part of us all; a language defying translation. It is art. It is therapy. It is medicine, magic, and memories. The late Maya Angelou declared, “Music was my refuge.”

However music moves you, there are some things you should know to keep the groove going in your life. Hopefully this will help you fall for the sounds all around you here and now.

Chances are, you’re carrying a smartphone. Make sure you’re getting the most out of our investment; download and utilize a music listening app.  There are plenty to choose from: iTunes, Spotify, Play Music, Pandora, iHeart Radio, AOL Radio, NPR Radio, among others.

1) Make playlists. Save a few special ones for offline listening to avoid draining your data plan.
2) Don’t bore yourself with the same old tunes on repeat. You don’t have to wait two years for your favorite artists to release albums.  Keep your playlists alive between releases with music from local artists.

Carrying your favorite tracks around with you is a great start, but there’s still more you can do. From random Tuesday releases to live experiences, take a chance and try something new. Explore more.

1) Go see them (all) live.
2) Put some money aside specifically for experiences. Make meaningful moments out of your music.
3) Subscribe to a few email lists.  LivenationDo317Indianapolis Downtown Inc., and Old Soul Entertainment are some major players to keep up with who will, in turn, keep you in the loop.
4) “Like” venues on Facebook and other social networks.  The VogueThe Hi-FiRadio RadioWhite Rabbit CabaretOld National Centre,Klipsch Music CenterChispasThe ChatterboxChef Joseph’s at the Connoisseur RoomTastings, and the Indiana History Center’s Concerts on the Canal series are among the premium selection of places to which to keep your ears open (pun intended).

Indianapolis has a music scene.

Indianapolis has a music scene?  Indianapolis has a thriving music scene. From indie rock to R&B to classical to hip hop to international flavors from all over the world, Indianapolis has a vibrant music scene. Want proof? Well you’re in luck, here’s a great writeup of the Latin music explosion happening on the west side. ¡Viva Lafayette Road!

So whether by mobile app, by car, Pacers BikeshareBlueIndy CarshareIndyGo, or the feet you own, get to the music we already have so we can earn more. Indy’s a pretty nice show, and if you can’t hear the music here, take notes and turn up your own volume.
