Danielle Nimtz is a passionate not for profit professional dedicated to equitable education for all. She currently serves as the High School Programs Coordinator at Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis. She is a pragmatic organizer with a demonstrated history in community-oriented activism, multi-generational engagement, public relations, service-learning, self-development, and post-secondary educational affairs.

The 1828 Leadership Project, presented by Citizens Energy Group, is a civic leadership tract for Indy’s young leaders with the goal of fostering intentional relationships with a cross sector of Indianapolis’ thought leaders and decision makers. Danielle is a part of 1828’s Class X– learn more about her below!

How do you spend your days? For example, you can tell us about your career, side hustle or exercise routine whatever you want to share here we’re ready to listen.

My days are filled with women! As a mother to a 7-year-old daughter, we have fun taming our curly hair together, watching chick flicks, and playing video games (she just learned how to play The Sims). She keeps me busy and and on my toes! I was a “strong-willed” youngster and it’s no question that she inherited those same genes. In my day job, I work with a local nonprofit, Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis. I get the chance to work with the most amazing women and young people in the city! I primarily organize and execute our High School programs – it’s a lot like 1828! Our leadership development program is aimed at those “strong-willed” young leaders who inspire, lead, and motivate everyone around them. But our work would not be so impactful without the equally impressive staff! I believe I work with the most passionate, innovative, and dedicated youth workers in the state! It’s a privilege to work at Girls Inc. Indy. Personally, I enjoy quad- skating, cooking vegan food, and listening to music with my partner. As Far-East side residence, we enjoy hitting the trails, shopping, and keeping up with local politics.

Are you a native to Indianapolis? If not Indianapolis, where are you from?

Northern Indiana, Ft Wayne area.

You’re off the clock, there are no expectations. What are you doing?

Cuddling up with my partner with either an interesting read or dramatic watch.

When thinking about the future of Indianapolis, what are you most looking forward to in the next 5 years and why?

I look forward to the advancement of public service and education outreach in the city. There is such a need for transparency and breaking obstacles for everyone to achieve their goals. As a nonprofit professional I hope to see a rapid change in our nonprofit sector while it professionalizes and shares recourses within. Then, the field can see a growth in capacity and capabilities. For Indy specifically, I hope that the community continues to be a cornerstone of the city. Acknowledging the history of our people and recognizing the true leaders and change makers.

Are there any local causes that you support? What are they and how might others learn more or get involved?

Three causes that I would like to see continue to create and implement change in the city – Indy Reads, Studs Who Lead, and Trinity Haven.

Indy Reads has such a great mission. With shockingly low literacy rates in our adults in Indy, the organization strives to provide English and literacy skills to adults to reach their full potential.

Studs Who Lead, an epicenter for BlaQ queer representation, creates spaces for celebration, networking, and empowerment for our masculine-presenting females in Indiana.

Trinity Haven Indy provides a safe, welcoming, and affirming home for LGBTQ+ youth who face homelessness from a variety of barriers and challenges.

Do you have a favorite local place in town (restaurant, bar, park, etc.) that you love going to? Where is it and why should other people try it out?

I’m not native – so I’m still discovering MY local pallet of entertainment and shopping. But my recent visits are Three Carrots in Fountain Square, Cul De Sac Restaurant on the Far East Side, Fort Harrison State Park, the vast trails in Warren Township, and our local Florist, Bloomin Season.

Indianapolis is a sprawling county, what’s your favorite part about our city?

Far East Side! All day!

If you were a superhero what would be your special trait? Why?

I would have a super brain! I would have a wealth of knowledge unknown by the human race. As Nelson Mandela says, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” That’s exactly what I plan to do.

You’re hosting your own music festival with three artists – Who’s performing?

Alicia Keys would headline with Ms. Lauryn Hill and Beyoncé.

If you had to listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be? Why?

Crooked Smile – J Cole

He is all around a great representation of humble! And it’s a great reminder. Keep your crooked smile, you’ve got this far with it!

Mornings or evenings? And Why.

Evenings, I’m incapable of waking up early in a good mood. But I’ll go to sleep happy 😃

How do you define success?

It’s subjective – I measure my success in the amount of peace and moral balance I have.

What would you name the autobiography of your life?

Determined to be Better Then Myself.
