Looking Forward: Black Indianapolis Artists Imagine the Future

FreeIn a panel discussion, learn about the long-term effects of African American enslavement on our shared history and sense of identity while looking to the future.
The discussion will be moderated by Kaila Austin, “Past is Present” outreach coordinator, artist, public historian, and community activist.
Panelists will include:
Matthew Cooper, artist and Herron alumnus
LaShawnda Crowe Storm, artist
Jonathan Michael Square, Ph.D., “Past is Present” guest curator and assistant professor of Black visual culture, Parsons School of Design
Shamira Wilson, artist and Herron alumna
This event is in conjunction with the exhibition “Past is Present: Black Artists Respond to the Complicated Histories of Slavery,” which runs from Sept. 28, 2022, to Jan. 14, 2023, at the Herron Galleries.
As a collaboration between Herron School of Art and Design, the Center for Africana Studies and Culture, and the IUPUI Senior Academy, the discussion will take place during IUPUI’s Spirit and Place Festival.

This event is free and open to the public. The panel discussion will take place in Eskenazi Hall’s Basile Auditorium on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. A reception will follow, which will end at 8 p.m.
