Mark Bode is the director of communications for the City of Indianapolis. A Hoosier native, he served as communications director for South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg before joining the Mayor Joe Hogsett administration in Indianapolis. He lives in Broad Ripple with his wife (Carrie), cat (Margaret Scratcher), and German Shepherd puppy (Buzz).

The 1828 Leadership Project, presented by Citizens Energy Group, is a civic leadership tract for Indy’s young leaders with the goal of fostering intentional relationships with a cross-sector of Indianapolis’ thought leaders and decision makers. Mark is a part of 1828’s Class XI . Learn more about him below.

How do you spend your days? For example, you can tell us about your career, side hustle or exercise routine whatever you want to share. We’re ready to listen.

Public service is a demanding line of work, but each day is an opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of residents. When I can spare the time, I enjoy exploring Indy’s trail system on walks, runs, or bike rides. I’ve also picked up my parents’ newfound love of amateur birding.

You’re off the clock, there are no expectations. What are you doing?

Biking or birding

When thinking about the future of Indianapolis, what are you most looking forward to in the next 5 years and why?

I’m looking forward to seeing the fruits of greater investments in our neighborhoods: safer streets, better infrastructure, and a community fully rebounded from the impacts of the pandemic.

Are there any local causes that you support? What are they and how might others learn more or get involved?

Working for the City, we support many different antiviolence orgs doing fantastic work.

You have a day off and you’re in Indianapolis. Share the agenda for your perfect Indy day.

Start up at Ripple Bagel and Deli, then walk the dog back home along the Monon. Nab some Yats for lunch (followed by a nap), then set off along the trail and bike along the Fall Creek Greenway out to Fort Harrison State Park. Head back downtown, grabbing a milkshake from Gordon’s on the way to see the Pacers at BLF.

Indianapolis is a sprawling county, what’s your favorite part about our city?

Definitely the people–Hoosier hospitality is a real thing. If it’s a physical feature, I’m gonna say the trails throughout Marion County.

You’re hosting an Indy-themed dinner party. What three guests are you inviting?

Peyton, Reggie, and Lance Stephenson

If you had to listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Jungleland – Bruce Springsteen

How do you define success?

Maximizing the impact of the cards you were dealt
