Have you heard of the secret, live concerts that have been happening once a month in Indy? A little confused/curious? It is kind of a secret, so I’m here to share what you need to know to be in on it.
What is it and why so secretive?
Sofar Sounds stands for “Sounds From a Room.” I love music, and I especially love seeing local bands and musicians right on the cusp of becoming well-known. What I sometimes hate about seeing these types of bands is that they typically play at smaller venues, to crowds that aren’t interested in listening to music. SoFar Sounds is a community of music lovers who want to listen.
Founded in 2010, it is a now a global community. Sofar shows are currently happening 1-2 times a month around the world in 224 cities. Volunteers and local businesses offer up their homes and spaces for these shows. To control the amount of people that can fit into these spaces, and to keep things exciting, Sofar keeps the line-up and the location a secret until 24hrs before the show. Fun, right?!
Be in the Know
I highly suggest you check it out. But, if you are still reluctantly thinking “ I don’t like Indie/Folk music,” or, “I’m not old enough/young enough,” or “I don’t want to waste my money” here are the answers to eliminate those concerns:
- Sofar keeps it interesting by providing a variety of music from hip hop, spoken word, to a full band. There are 3-4 acts per show, playing around 3 songs each. To get a taste of a Sofar show, visit the SoFar Indianapolis YouTube channel, Facebook page, or Instagram.
- Sofar is for everyone. Yep, everyone; bring your parents, or your children. All are welcome! Be aware, though, that Sofar Indy is sponsored by Lagunitas Brewing Company, and they are dedicated to making sure their listeners who want to partake in alcohol are of age. Also, bring a friend,
bring a chair, BYOB. Just make sure to adjust your attendance online to +1 to ensure a proper head count. - The best part? It’s all donation based. Pay $1, pay $20; pay whatever you can. The money goes to the talented and hardworking musicians and artists that make the experience so special and unique.
